Illustrations

I have written a story. What will you need from me to start sketching?

Below are the requirements for us to sketch the artwork for your book:

  1. We will need the final edited manuscript.
  2. Scene descriptions if you have a vision for your book.
  3. Character details.
  4. Point no.#2&#3 are not compulsory but will be important if you are very particular with what you want. It will also save us from doing rework.

How many illustrations should a children’s book have?

Standard children’s books are of 24 or 32 pages long. You can increase the page count as per your requirements. But the minimum is 24 pages.

Not all the pages have illustrations. If we leave pages that includes copyright and title page then there will be 28-30 pages for story. It will be your choice to go with a spread image or a single page illustration.

For a single page illustration we can place the text on the other side of the spread to minimize the cost for you. You can expect minimum 14-15 single page illustrations.

Can I supply pics or examples for inspiration?

Yes, that will be helpful to match the artwork as per your vision.

How long will it take to illustrate my book?

Illustrations are a time consuming job. From our experience it will take 5-6 weeks time to finish 18-20 full page illustrations.

There will be a feedback and revision rounds too that is not included in this time frame. So plan accordingly.

What are different type of illustrations?

There are four type of illustrations we usually use in a children’s book:

  1. Spot illustration
  2. Half-page illustration
  3. Full bleed single page illustration
  4. Spread illustration
What are spot illustrations in children's books?

Spot illustrations are usually with no background or with minimal background. They are particularly useful when we have multiple scenes to incorporate in a single page.

Do you do sample illustration work?

Starting a new business relationship is always risky. To cover up the risk we do sample illustrations to see if we both can work with each other.

With sample work as per your requirements and vision you will get to know if we can match your expectations.

Before placing an order we request you to visit our portfolio page to see our art style.

Do you sign a contract?

Yes, we do sign a contract.

Do I have to make a payment with the order?

Yes, we charge 50% upfront fee and rest upon completion of the art work.

Book Printing

What file formats do you accept?

We accept 300 dpi CMYK PDF file to print. PDF file contains all the fonts, links and graphics embedded in the file and there is no chance of missing any.

What is the difference between RGB and CMYK color formats?

RGB is the color majorly used on web and digital devices. It stands for Red, Green and Blue.

CMYK is used for printing purposes and stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. Four color is a common printing term and stands for these four colors.

RGB files must be converted into CMYK files before printing.

What is a bleed and why it’s important?

Bleed area ensures that the artwork always run to the edges of the page. Bleed area will be cut off in the final product. You need to allow 1/8 of an inch bleed i.e. 0.125 inch at the top, bottom and the outside edges of the pages.

Gutters should not be given any bleed area.

Example: If you’re preparing a standard book size i.e. 8.5 X 11 inch, the final size including bleed should be 8.625 x 11.125 inches.

What resolution should be used for printing?

We accept files set at minimum 300 dpi resolution. File with 300 dpi is considered a high resolution file and ensure final product doesn’t look grainy when printed.

When do I know if my files are ready to print?

You can send your final PDF file to us for a free assessment. It’ll take us a day or two to let you know if your file is print ready. If we find any issue like any image set at below 300 dpi or bleed or margin issue we’ll give you a feedback on what needs to be done to make it print ready.

What is the minimum number of copies that I can print?

We can print as low as 1 copy but shipping will only be cost effective if you order minimum 50 copies.

For our offshore clients our minimum order quantity is 50 copies to few thousands.

How do I upload my files for my order?

Since the printing files are heavier to send via email attachments we recommend below options:

  1. You can email the files via www.wetransfer.com. Once on their website put our email (epublishingexperts@gmail.com), your email address, your message and then add your file. You can send up to 2GB of files at no charges.
  2. You can also use Dropbox to share a link to download the file.

Section 508 Compliance Remediation

What is an accessible PDF?

Accessible PDF document can read and accessed by people with disabilities. These documents can be read using assistive technology through text-to-speech or a Braille printout.

What is the difference between the PDF and accessible PDF?

A PDF can be converted into an accessible PDF if the text blocks are marked with tags and have searchable text that can be read through text to speech or a Braille printout.

How to check if the PDF is accessible?

There are three quick ways one can check if the PDF is accessible using Acrobat Pro:

Step 1: Select the text using mouse, or select all text from Acrobat menu. If text is not selectable then it’s an image PDF file and is not accessible.

Step2: Go to File properties. You will see Tagged PDF field. If it says “No” the PDF file needs to be tagged for accessibility.

Step3: Checking accessibility errors: Select Tools > Accessibility > Full Check. It will generate a report. If there are errors identified they need to be fixed for accessibility.

How to make PDFs 508 Compliant?
  • Structure the original source code properly.
  • Run an Accessibility Check.
  • Document the properties.
What document formats can you make accessible?

We can use InDesign, PDF or microsoft documents like MS Word, Excel, Power point and Publisher.

If the document is scanned we will run Optical Character Reading, proof read the text for any mistake and make the accessible PDF applying the valid tagging structure.

How do I send files for my order?

Since the files may be heavier to send via email attachments we recommend below options:

  1. You can email the files via www.wetransfer.com. Once on their website put our email (epublishingexperts@gmail.com), your email address, your message and then add your file. You can send up to 2GB of files at no charges.
